GCSE Art and Design

GCSE art and design will provide you with a wide range of creative and stimulating opportunities to explore your interests. You will develop imaginative and innovative ways of working and understanding media, materials and technology. Developing your skills in a variety of art subject areas such as textile design, fine art, photography, graphic communication and three-dimensional design.

The course consists of a two-unit specification. Unit 1 is a Personal Portfolio, this component is worth 60% of the GCSE. You will produce a portfolio of work based on coursework from a variety of starting points set by your teacher over a two-year period. Unit 2 an externally Set Assignment, this component is worth 40% of a GCSE. You will produce research studies and personal outcomes based on a theme set by the examiners.

 

You will be marked on four Assessment objectives:

AO1

How you develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources.

AO2

How you refine work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes. 

AO3

How you record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses.

AO4

How you present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language.

Throughout the topics you will have a number of opportunities to explore and discover your local area such as capturing first hand images of nature and the city, using your photography skills along with visits to art galleries and museums .     

A GCSE art and design is a strong foundation for further progression to art and design related courses along with developing employability skills such as Communication, creative thinking, Problem-solving, and Self-management skills.
