The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award scheme is the first of three awards offered by the DofE charity and is a widely-respected achievement by colleges and employers. The course is fun, exciting and challenging, and will help you learn and improve your life skills and prepare you for the future.

The Bronze award consists of four sections:

Physical

This can be any kind of physical activity such as walking, running, dancing or playing football.

Volunteering

This is giving time to help people, the community or society, the environment or animals. It must not be done for a business and it must be done for no payment in return. The volunteering activities can include working for a charity or doing environmental protection and litter-picking.

Skills

For this section you must learn a new skill or improve one you already have. This could include playing a musical instrument or doing sports coaching.

Expedition

The expedition is a two-day trip where you will be doing six hours of activity each day (this could be walking, cycling, canoeing) and you will camp overnight.

To complete the Bronze Award you must spend six months doing one of the three sections (physical, volunteering, skills) and three months doing the other sections.

Once you have completed the award, you can progress onto the Silver award which is longer and more challenging.
